Left Pine Hollow to travel to low angle aspens. We traveled along steep south facing slopes, knowing that they were mostly bare before the storm. Still, we observed cracking and a couple small D .5 slides that did not propogate nor run very far. Hand pits suggested a density change right above an ice/crust layer where the snow was failing.
This was a bit surprising. more notably, we noticed very widespread collapsing once we reached about 7500 feet until 8000 feet, mostly on relatively flat or north and east facing slopes. This was similar to what mark white posted up near lambs canyon. I have never experienced anything near that level of collapsing, often pieces 30-50 feet wide. We certainly would have triggered something in if we were on anything steeper. I believe this was failing on the 3-4 inches of new snow from the last storm that was beginning to facet. This may settle out quickly, but I think further observations are required before ruling out a PWL problem on slopes below 8000 feet in Provo.
Danger rating reflects the elevation bands we traveled at (7000-8200).
