Comments
Mostly interested in the new snow and wind interface with
the old snow. In short it seemed pretty glued on and it skied that way the day before with 4 inches feeling like 12. Got an ECTN15 within the new snow about 10cm down and it took 25 whacks before fracture without propagation on the old snow surface. It was a snow pack only a mother could love with wind skin, two crusts sandwiching weak snow, and strengthening foundation on top of about 20cm of facets that were wet, rounding and seeming to gain strength. Along the route exposed upper elevation S facing slopes the wind impact ranged from nothing to a fairly robust soft slab and was highly variable with little discernible pattern.
Cloudy skies, warm temps and wind on any exposed feature. We did not experience rain during our tour from roughly 1100 to 1300; but did hear that it was raining at sunny side across the canyon. The skiing above 9k was very fun on a fast supportable wind zipper about 10cm thick on top of a pencil hard sun crust. The skiing did deteriorate substantially either from rain or warmth or both below 9k. Did not appear to be a lot of takers on the upper LCC lines and faces.
