Comments
Total depth was 28" (73cm). There was a stout melt-freeze crust (likely rain event) in the mid pack with very dry facets underneath. We got no propagation with extended column tests, but did have failure with compression tests underneath this crust. Right now there are 2 weak layers in this snowpit. One near the surface and one closer to the ground. Both could create avalanches in the future if we see more wind or snow. What is missing from this snowpit, in this location, is a slab. We just don't have enough weight on top of the weak layers right now in this location.

Thin snow coverage and in meadows and on southerly facing slopes there is still signs of wildflowers, stumps, and down logs. We tried to find a southeast facing aspect to dig on, but were not able to find any representative locations as most of the southeast facing terrain was very thin with lots of brush or had wind loaded snow. The snow surface was soft below 9,000' and made up of faceted loose crystals. This weak layer of snow near the surface will likely become a player once we get more snow and wind in the future. This snowpack looks very much like a continental snowpack, similar to what most of Colorado or the La Sal Mountains (outside of Moab) have. Read more about a continental snowpack HERE.
