Snow Characteristics Comments
Beautiful day. Felt like the half way mark on the season with cold dry snow on the north and east facing slopes and rollerballs and mushy hot pow on the lower elevation westerly facing slopes. Sastrugi up high above 10,600' and above treeline in the wind zone. Roller balls and pin wheels that broke themselves up before getting any bigger than a bowling ball on north-west and west facing slopes. Due north and east facing slopes were cold dry powder snow down to 8000'. Low angle north and east facing were great sking once you got below the wind zone.
Trent and Mark put it well in their observation from Mill Creek- sliding onto a slope below the wind slab was better travel and kept us out of the areas where you were more likely to trigger a wind-slab avalanche.

Problem #1 Comments
Previous wind loading and stripping created sastrugi on the surface above 10, 600' or in exposed alpine areas above tree line in other locations. In steeper locations with higher consequence terrain I would have been more wary of traveling over this wind-drifted snow as any size avalanche in committing terrain could have poor consequences.

Comments
Snowpit was dug in wind zone. 100' below snowpit location was soft surface snow. Wind slab avalanche problem was isolated to skis and breaking up before going anywhere.
Snow surface showed signs of wind-loading and scouring. Wind slab had small grain facets on surface.
