Problem #1 Comments
During this last storm, this area picked up 8-12" of new snow which fell on a variety of bed surfaces. In many areas there is a smooth and consistent sun crust which is promoting long, fast sluffs and push-alanches in steep terrain. There were also a few isolated areas in which the new snow seemed to have formed small slabs. I expect this problem to decrease over the next few days.
Comments
I started my tour at 9:30am under clear, cool skies. The Mill B South area had seen 8-12" of low density snow fall in favored areas and no notable wind loading. Around noon the clouds rolled in and a light breeze picked up, keeping the new snow cold. While the skiing conditions were good, the skinning conditions were quite rough.
With very little snow over the last month and a half, the snow on the ground has begun to do some interesting things. In many areas, there just isn't snow any more but in the east facing areas of Mill B South, much of the old snow has begun to facet with a very stout sun crust on top. Right now this creates some interesting but manageable conditions but if we get significant loading again I think we are likely to see a resurgence of PWL issues in some areas. This facet layer showed some activity in what I would consider an "extreme terrain" (large rocks and steep) area where I experienced collapsing and cracking of about 20ft.
