There was widespread surface hoar up to 8000ft, as large as 20mm or so down low and decreasing to just 1 or 2mm by the time I reached my high point. I imagine this gets cooked off on southerly/westerly aspects, but the east aspects still had well preserved feathers by 1130am, so I wouldn't be surprised if it is reasonably persistent in the northeast quadrant of the compass well into the mid elevation band. However, given the anticipated wait time to our next storm, I imagine it won't be too signifcnat as I expect much/all of the 21 January snowfall will recrystallize in one form or another.
The surface hoar was atop the 2 day old powder, which was increasing a bit in density but wasn't quite hot pow. This sat atop a (mostly) supportable crust with the old recrystallized snow underneath. With the crust below, I observed some sluffing beneath my skis in the loose snow.
I didn't have high expectations for the skiing, but I ended up finding very nice turns above 7500ft.
