Overall a stable snowpack, but here's a few things we found of interest:
- Rain/snow line from Jan 5/6 around 7,500'
- Widespread surface hoar below 7,500' with stout rain crust underneath.
- Above 7,500' there is some weak snow at the surface that has undergone faceting, but it's also not that widespread and currently not all that weak. Winds have helped as they've scoured many exposed slopes. We'll see what happens over the next period as we await more snow, but for now I am more concerned with weak snow at the existing snow surface below 7,500' than the upper elevations.
We found old, faceted snow on northerly aspects above 8,000'. But the facets are 4F hardness and damp in some areas. The slab on top of 1 - 1.2m deep and is 4F/1F in hardness. There seems to be good coverage on upper elevation northerly aspects where there is faceted snow down near the ground so there are few spots where triggering a deep avalanche in the faceted snow (thin, steep, rocky terrain) is possible.
The image below shows some crystals in the faceted layer on a northerly slope at 8,600'. What I find interesting about this photo is the green arrows are pointing to rounding edges and sintering but the red arrow points to a faceted crystal. This photo seems to sum up the status of the faceted layer - gaining strength (sintering/rounding) but still some facets.
