Comments
Snow pack is only about 30cm deep throughout the main north facing tree run. I was caught off guard by the amount of collapsing even in the shallow dense snowpack. On the drive up to summit park from PC I had prematurely proclaimed that Mt Aire looked bushy enough that it might be good to ski once ample snow coverage was in place. The quick tour at similar aspect and elevation proved this proclamation to be inaccurate and dangerous. Although the weak layer in these types of locations is fairly shallow and irregular, it is still plentiful enough to cause regular collapsing and subsequently avalanches.

Photo is of a snow profile dug at the location of a collapse. I think it does a good job highlighting the irregularity of the weak layer at this elevation, and why a single snow pit is not enough to determine what the snowpack consists of throughout these types of low elevation locations. On the left, at the ground there are no faceted grains. Several inches over to the right and the snow goes from +4f to loose fist facets.
