This is my second day of corn snow (melt-freeze snow) skiing in upper Big Cottonwood Canyon. It was quite good corn snow. Like yesterday, there was a solid refreeze overnight but today the temperatures were slightly warmer with less wind so the southeast facing slopes softened up turning from crunchy, loud, slide-for-life surfaces to delightful, grippy corn by about 11:00 am for an untracked run into South Monitor on a southeast facing slope. By about noon, the south facing slopes softened up enough to be good. We headed back to the cabin by 1:00 pm. There's not much snow left on south facing slopes at elevations below about 8,000'. I was surprised at how rapidly they have melted out this spring but we were out of town and missed the past couple weeks. There's still plenty of snow on the other aspects, though. But all this is a moot point with a forecast for more snow on the way for the rest of the week. Low danger today but the future danger depends on what the usually-unpredictable, spring weather does. Stay tuned....
