Comments
Dug two pits as part of AIARE Level 2 class on W and E aspects on a small knoll at 9200ft in middle of White Pine drainage, both on 25deg slopes, just E of the Spire.
Summary: A thick layer of rounding facets still exists at ground interface but is well-capped and unlikely to trigger under current conditions. Facets showing signs of healing. High winds on ridges suggest possible formation of new wind slab.
W snowpack measured 210cm, E 140cm.
Both pits revealed rounding facets at bottom of snowpack (W: 0-90cm, E: 0-55cm) with a thick, well-consolidate slab of rounds from there to just shy of the surface where we found 10-15cm of ice laminate.
Loupe examination of ground-layer facets revealed significant rounding and sintering. Possible to form snowball.
Deep Tap Test in E pit failed at DTH-26-BRK. Propagation Saw Test in E pit at top of facets (55cm) failed at PST-55/100-END.
While our location was well-sheltered and only experienced moderate winds, surrounding high ridges (Red Baldy, Lake Peak, Temptation Ridge, etc.) clearly experiencing strong or extreme winds with significant snow plumes for most of day despite low available snow to transport. Likely formation of shallow wind slabs in some locations including Red Baldy, Tri Chutes, Birthday Chutes, and others.
