Persistent Weak Layer
Problem #1 Comments
Still there, likely staying for a while and developing additional weak layers above. Totals in the area were between 95-110cm on the north end. Dug 4 pits, one failed at 17 taps on a mellow angle on a WNW aspect, featured mostly faceted snow plus a thin crust I'll picture from the recent rain/graupel event, plus the wind. All the slabs I popped out even after no results with taps were pretty blended with facets and failing on some pure whole grain facets. Overall there's still some good turns to find in low angle, unconnected and shady aspects.
Avalanche Problem #2
Problem
Wind Drifted Snow
Problem #2 Comments
Seems like winds hammered the mtns overnight, minimal snowfall but mainly graupel and some older snow in sheltered/shady areas seemed a bit loaded, but in the area not so reactive on test slopes, possibly due to the high traffic the areas sees or just not enough weight? The slab wasn't necessarily hard but there and formed on the weak layer. Could've been more of those darn branches I find in the pits, but even shifting 10ft either way in a clean column wasn't doing much in terms of results. I figure less skied areas with a bit more exposure would see more red flags, didn't even get a collapse today but again I barely found any good, undisturbed areas to dig.
Comments
Overall noticed a poor snowpacks structure, seems like there's been a few rumors of healing [ Forecaster Comment: Don't pay attention to those rumors! The snowpack continues to weaken.] but even with one full failure at ectp17 from 4 pits the structure isn't there to be supportive in big or technical terrain, and any added wind and significant snow will likely produce. Not the time to gamble still, I figure since much of this PWL hasn't been flushed out due to minimal snowfall there's still danger lurking, but in t's the season for popping a slab out as the 10th rider down the slope on the wrong angle. Still very thin, plenty of present downed limbs in the trees and exposed rocks to have a bad time on.
