Problem #1 Comments
PWL continues to be the biggest problem we face as more snow begins to overload this layer. With new snow accumulation around 40cm, the facets do not have the structure to support the new snow resulting in widespread cracking and collapsing as has been seen the last couple days. Some places have a melt/freeze crust or windslab intermixed in the facets which creates even more of a problem.

Problem #2 Comments
We have gained 40cm of snow in two weeks. While snow from these various layers has generally bonded well, there is difference in snow density between the storms in some areas is allowing small new snow slides.
Comments
Started my tour around 1100 under overcast skies which broke to clear skies by 1130. It was bitterly cold out this morning with some light winds thrown in although I could hear the wind blowing hard up high. I toured up Days Fork to Chicken Shit Ridge to ski some of the lower angle protected areas. The last two weeks have made the skiing much better and is now covering most rocks and stumps close to the ground. I dug a pit on a North facing sheltered area at around 8800'. Just getting over to dig my pit I heard a collapse. Looking at the pit, there is a melt/freeze crust at 30-35cm which has facets on both sides. Did an ECT which failed at 13 at the facet/new snow interface.
Unfortunately we are in for the long haul with our unstable snowpack. The good news is that the lower elevation and more sheltered areas are beginning to fill in.
