Comments
Took another trip out to Cardiac Ridge Run to enjoy the Thanksgiving over-delivery. Observed long running natural sloughs around Cardiac Bowl and the surrounding faces from the night before. The sun was hot in the early AM and quickly settled out instabilities in the area we were skiing. The snow was behaving itself and we didn't have any sloughing while skiing. There was no wind to speak of while we were out during the morning.
Dug a snow pit at 10,300 ft on an due east facing aspect. Total snow depth was 80CM with the top 20CM being the low density Utah blower from the night before. The snow pack is mostly right side up, but there is a melt crust at about 50CM up from the bottom that has faceted snow directly below it. I think this crust/facet combo is going to be the layer to keep our eyes on when we start getting more snow. Once that layer gets a good load of snow on it we will likely start seeing connected avalanches.
One other observation to note is that when you put your pole into the snow near rocks and thin snow it is noticeably more faceted than the pit we dug. These thin rocky spots are going to be likely trigger points for slab avalanches in the future.
[Forecaster Comment: Great point, Adam. Persistent weak layers are often triggered in thinner snowpack areas such as around rocks.]
