Problem #1 Comments
I was very surpised to trigger multiple large collapses today. First was on mellow terrain near the NE entrance to Maybird gulch from Red Pine, NW facing slope at 9800'. I thought it maybe an anomaly, but had a second more surprising collapse. Traveling above upper Red Pine Lake just East of the usual skintrack to gain the ridge, I was on an established track that had clearly been used by 3-4 skiers the same day. Approaching the slightly steeper terrain just before the ridge I felt a collapse and could hear it propagate East into the steeper terrain. Nothing slid. I would guess that as the sun warms the crust formed over the last 24 hours, it is no longer bridging skier weight and it becomes possible to trigger the weak layer that caused the cycle a few days ago. This collapse was my signal to go home.
Avalanche Problem #2
Problem
Wet Snow
Problem #2 Comments
There was some point release activity moving on Easterly slopes around 9500' by 10:30 am. Shallow skier triggered sluffs were moving but not far. Some larger natural point releases were visible on Easterly terrain along the West ridge of Maybird.
Comments
Traveled from White->Red Pine, up to the Church and around into Maybird. From there over into the ridge and skiing down to Red Pine Lake before ascending towards the ridge to the South. Surface snow was a mixture of solid refreeze with no fresh below 8000', and a mix of crusts, wet snow, and damp new snow above. North facing is holding some soft and unaffected snow above 10k. I was hoping that the instability from the last storm would have healed by now, but it seems not to have. A few more days of hot sun and cold nights may do the trick, but unfortunately I think that the only areas holding sheleterd cold snow are those that will continue to be spooky moderate. Low but persistent probability of triggering a reasonably large avalance. Strange conditions for mid-April.
