I didn't see much in the lines of major red flags today aside from some very manageable loose dry is steep terrain. Also, not much wind loading - surprised given yesterday's winds were blowing when I was in Hidden Canyon. Nice to have good skiing again!
Anyway this ob is more of a note to keep in mind as we prepare for a potentially larger storm next week. We've largely been seeing small storms in what I feel like is a more late spring snowpack - not typical for March as the interfaces have felt more like the end of April... Crusts on the solars and varying degrees of either windboard or decomposing soft snow on the shaded slopes.
Today while skiing North and North East facing slopes, I noticed that under our 30cm of storm snow was a decomposing thermal crust. It was super minor, but what was noticeable was the facets above and below this. I didn't bring my scope, but it seems like some are rounding and some are angular. Either way, if we were to put 2 to 3 inches of liquid on top of this with a bit of wind swirled into the mix I would suspect some pretty good avalanche activity. And having seen this just play out in the Tetons, almost 3 inches of water on a spring snowpack interface, with avalanches flying all over the place, I figured it was worth noting since we have some folks out there touring who aren't usually out and about given the ski resort closures.
Below are a couple photos from my hasty pit, 10K North facing.
