Snow Characteristics Comments
Smooth dust-on-crust, a bit scratchy on steeper slope and nicer in lower angled terrain. The upper (most recent) sun-crust was breakable in places, but solid and slick in Ham Hollow. So hard and slick in fact, that we decided not to climb it the upper part, lacking crampons and ice ax. It would be possible to slip and fall and "slide for life" or slide out of control down steep slopes in this condition.
Red Flags
Red Flags Comments
We did not note any red flags. We observed Low danger where we traveled.

Problem
Wind Drifted Snow

Problem #1 Comments
There was only about an inch of new snow in Ham Hollow, winds were fairly light because the area is sheltered from westerly winds, and we did not notice any drifting. In areas that picked up more snow, (5 inches at Tony Grove) there are probably fresh drifts up to about a foot deep and people could trigger avalanches of wind drifted snow in exposed upper elevation areas.
Comments
We observed stable snow in Wood Camp, with more danger from falling and sliding out-of-control on steep slopes with only an inch or so of new snow on hard and slick sun-crust. To avoid this problem, we'll bring an ice ax and crampons (or at least ski crampons) if we try it or a similar route in the near future.
