Comments
Went up Maybird Couloir this morning around 9a with a friend. We were passed by a group of 3 coming down just after entering the bottom of the couloir. They said snow up high was really good, but was getting variable as they came down. We observed very sugary snow that made setting a skinner super annoying. There were some old debris chunks covered by new snow that we noted as well. We made it to the top of Maybird couloir with snow quality seeming pretty good. Decided to continue past the other group's tracks towards Sunset peak. Clouds were beginning to sock us in and the wind picked up. There was some wind affect on the ridge but didn't seem to be cracking or an issue (yet). Continued to approx. 10,800 feet when the fog and wind deterred us. Snow was beginning to crack more significantly and although it didn't see to be an issue yet we thought it best not to ascend higher where the wind slab issue would be worse. We skied down the ridge into the couloir, snow was great. Around approx. 9000 ft the snow changed significantly. There was a crust later underneath new soft snow and hidden old debris chunks. Thre lower we went the worse it got. Snow was much heavier and stickier than on the way up. We noted many small wet slides from the surround steep walls. Had it been a sunny day I think the wet slide issue would have been much more of a concern. Luckily we had clouds all day.
For note, the grauppel layer was very similar to the observation from Mt. Olympus yesterday, though we didn't have rivers of it running down. I would not want to ski this couloir again soon with the predicted storms on the way. The crust and grauppel combined are going to be a sketchy layer.
