I've been meaning to write this ob, but powder skiing and snow clearing have been in the way.
On Saturday while teaching a 101, Bo Torrey and I set up a pit for the students. I was looking for the weak layer that Trent found in Mineral and Drew found in the Meadows, and I was able to find a thin layer of it as well.
Pit location was roughly 9800' WNW. Results were CT23 - more towards a Q1 break, but not a ton of energy either. ECTN23. The propagation didn't extend beyond half of the column. They were breaking 70cm below the surface, of which is now deeper since the subsequent storm.
Last week I was skiing in Mineral on Monday and Tuesday. And while the skiing was great and out of the wind, the steep slopes spared from the wind machine were deteriorating. On Wednesday, and after the first bout of snow, Drew found this layer though it wasn't active. Both of these locations, as well as the one our pit was in on Saturday, were sheltered terrain that do not see as much wind as other locales.
Yesterday I found this layer to be spotty still on some mid elevation E aspects. It seems like some areas the near surface facets were preserved while others not, and with 3 feet of blower potentially slabbing up in some areas I'm keeping this issue in the back of my mind.
