Comments
Snowpack was generally right side up with ~12" of light powder on top. Ski pole probing revealed isolated areas with poor structure near the ground. We observed what appeared to be a small slide in the new storm snow that must have broken naturally prior to the last couple of inches falling. It broke around 9500 feet and slid a few hundred vertical. It was not deep and the debris pile appeared small and soft, though we did not dig in it. The pit shown here is at about 9200' between Lazy Days and Lucky Days up Days Fork. It is about 43" deep. Firmness increased from fist down to 1 finger at the ground. Isolated pockets in the pit did have large grain faceted snow at the bottom 1"-2". This was not consistent across the whole ground interface. It appeared to occur at rocks. Where the pit went to earth the snow was firm and well bonded. Snow depth along the slope was varied from about 3' up to about 5'. An extended column test resulted in shearing at the new/old snow interface about 12" down. This occurred at 2 or 3 whacks fro the elbow. It did not propagate across the column or pull out with energy. The new snow did not form a cohesive slab. We were not able to get any shearing at the ground or elsewhere in the pack.
