Avalanche Problem #1
Problem
Persistent Weak Layer
Trend

Problem #1 Comments
Several persistent weak layers were observed. Basal facets from the 11/20 storm and subsequent cold temperatures were 1-2 mm but starting to round and somewhat cohesive. Two buried surface hoar layers were also evident, 2 and 10 cm down, as well as the current surface which had 2-4 mm surface hoar crystals. These layers will likely become reactive with new snow. Strong temperature gradients in thin snowpacks at lower elevations will likely continue to weaken the snow. We also observed a clean break while shoveling and working in the pit, where the lower dust layer was observed. Perhaps there is a bit of an interface between the two storm pulses in the Thanksgiving Storm that is worth noting as well.
Avalanche Problem #2
Problem
Wind Drifted Snow
Problem #2 Comments
Even at lower elevations in protected areas, light wind effect was evident.

Comments
This last week of cold weather has created strong temperature gradients in the snowpack, making it weaker, especially where it is thin. The upper portion of the snowpack contains buried surface hoar (in sheltered areas) as well as near surface facets aka "recycled powder"-something to watch when the next storm comes in...
