I toured up Red Pine to get a look at the Pfiefferhorn and a few other peaks to see what the spring weather was throwing at the mountains. Greg was spot on with today's forecast. The south/southwest winds up AF/ Dry Creek kept the high elevation South and East aspects cool, turning me around from a firm Pfiefferhorn ascent. The high elevation North facing snow held out for a pleasant run down No Name Baldy, noting only a touch of crust on dead north. The temps slowly warmed in Red Pine as the clouds played cat and mouse with the sun. When the sun was out, it was out. Most of the East and West facing terrain in mid to upper Red Pine took a punch of sun yesterday with some Ikea worthy cinnamon buns on West and some small wet point releases on East. I only saw a couple small crowns, approx 6", that looked to be a result of mid canyon wind whirling and loading.
Snow surfaces we a mixed bag of Elmer's Glue and Idaho Russets on sun cooked slopes and on all aspects at elevations below 9,400ft. Above 9,400ft the sun still did some work to cook East facing, but spared high North for most of the day until by 2:30 exit.
Photo #1: West Facing wet activity, debris from pre and post last storm
Photo #2 Small Mid Canyon windslab WNW 9,600ft, guessing this happened with greenhousing yesterday
Photos #3-5 High elevation clean slates
Photo #6 Good enough for a couple laps
