Problem #1 Comments
Noted several small releases in the low elevation gullies. By the time I left at around 1pm, all snow above 9k skied great, but most solar snow under 9k was very wet and easily sliding into gullies on a hard crust from before this last storm.
Comments
Traveled up Bowman fork to the bottom of Cabin Run, and gained the ridge to Gobbler's proper. Snow above 9000 feet was surprisingly good on all aspects. It had settled down to about 12-14" in upper Porter Fork, and skied fast. Everything below 9k was pretty junk, as with the high spring sun, almost every aspect is seeing a decent amount of solar radiation. Tomorrow will likely have a thick crust on nearly every aspect at low/mid elevations, north facing trees and couloirs above 9k will still hold some great snow.
Picture is of the sympathetically released avalanche reported yesterday off Gobbler's south summit. The entire slope was covered in spiderwebbing cracks on both sides of the ski tracks, the skiers are extremely lucky this didn't propagate across the whole face.
