Comments
Overcast skies in AM became obscured at times in PM when the storm trundled in from the NW. Rime snow out of the north beginning about 12:20. Light but consistently falling.
5" new snow. Medium density.
No red flags.
Some light snow transfer atop Little Water, but winds were generally light, gusting maybe into moderate. No windboard, sastrugi, and no whippet required.
No avalanches observed. Truth be told, I could have been looking for them more concertedly, but I'm gonna lay some of the blame on the low-lying clouds and poor visibility. Ha!
New snow seems to have bonded well on both north and south aspects. No sluffing. No cracking.
New snow interface on north unreactive on shovel tilt test. CTN on south-facing slope at 9160ft.
Skiing on north was creamy and consistent. Snow was too dense for face shots, but the powder was cleaner and deeper than expected. About 6" new snow on north aspects at mid-elevation. Thinner blanket of new snow on south, and while conditions weren't as top-notch as we've seen at times this season, they were all-around much better than expected.
Hoping tonight brings a nice refresh of 5 to 6".
Suspect winds tonight will remain light, gusting into 20s. While there's a good amount of new snow to move around, I suspect wind drifted snow won't be much of an issue tomorrow.
Exercise general caution, safe route finding and descent practices, give those cornices a wide berth, smile, and get after it while the gettin's good!
