Problem #1 Comments
While the road was closed for plowing today we did some exploring on N and NW facing slopes between 8300 and 9500 ft. New snow in this zone was in the 12-14” range, on top of a firmer crust developed prior to the last round of delicious storms.
We experienced several small collapses, but no visible cracking in the new snow. Still a day and conditions to play it very cautious.

Problem #2 Comments
Definitely some drifting observed around the base of aspen trees, but it was surprising that much of the new snow was still suspended on horizontal branches and logs.
One curious feature we found was a subalpine cornice formed at about 9000 feet on the leeward side of an exposed meadow. The cornice was about 6 ft tall and showed how much transport open areas have seen this winter (see photo).
Comments
Good day to geek out on maps and aerial photos and go explore with your friends. Snow depth at 9000 ft was 160 cm.
We talked about how lucky we are that the road gets plowed at all. If you have a chance, thank a Grand County plow driver for keeping our skiing accessible!
Have fun and watch out for your buddies in all the new snow!
