New Snow
Problem #1 Comments
At the start of our tour around 10am new snow from the storm had been coming in (since 3am) at a little more than 1"/hr. Most of what we saw falling contained graupel. Rate of snow seemed to slow through the late morning and afternoon with only about an additional 3" falling during our 5 hr tour. Total storm snow we measured from start of storm until about 4pm was around 12". Composition of snow seemed to be largely heavy over weak on all aspects and elevations 8000'-9500'.
Avalanche Problem #2
Problem
Wind Drifted Snow
Problem #2 Comments
Moderate to strong winds out of the S/SE were pushing snow to the N over the ridgeline at the top of USA Bowl . The USA Bowl was also seeing significant cross slope winds. Some soft wind slabs were starting to form measuring about 3" deep on surface on the upper half of the bowl. The lower half was wind sheltered enough to not have this problem.
Comments
From the ridge above USA Bowl our group took a little sight seeing detour out along the spur ridge from the antennas to the knob above No Name Bowl. We wanted to see if any of the over 35 degree slopes, especially those that might be getting significant wind loading, would have signs of natural avalanching. We did not see sign of any such activity.
In general the low angle slopes, out of the wind effects playing out along the ridge line, were holding excellent creamy snow with great skiing.
