Comments
All but North aspects have melt freeze crusts of varying thickness. South aspects have a stout fully supportable crust and slide for life falls could be a real hazard on steep terrain during the mornings this week. Windboard, wind crust, and sastrugi all present on the Millcreek side of Gobbler's ridgeline, but the winds seem to have been relegated only to the higher ridges in this area. Little to no wind affect a few hundred feet down off the ridge, even out in the open.
Despite the mild temps and intense sun over the weekend, it's still January and the snow surface on non wind-affected terrain is starting to weaken. Not bad right now, but with a full week of clear cold nights in the forecast, the facet machine may turn on in earnest.
Interested to see how much the snow surface weakens on N facing throughout the week and if any of the crusts will end up hiding preserved weak layers. Also interested to see if the mid-pack weak layers in thin snowpack areas will continue to strengthen this week or head in the opposite direction.
For now - travel conditions are easy, the weather's beautiful, and there's still excellent riding conditions to be found on sheltered mid and low elevation north facing terrain.
