Problem #1 Comments
There was a surprising amount of new snow in Upper Big Cottonwood Canyon - the road itself only had a few inches on it, but the backcountry was a wallow-fest of 12+ inches of heavy snow. We stayed off of steep slopes, but even on mellower angles, there was no cracking or collapsing that we saw. A large amount of weight has been added, but it came in very warm, wet and sticky, and wasn't as sensitive as I would have imagined.
Comments
It was more like trudging than skiing today as new snow was so heavy. From an avalanche avoidance perspective, it was tricky skiing as you needed enough of an angle to actually get moving (maybe 20 degrees) but if you went too steep, there was a good chance of triggering a slide. If you went too shallow, you were just going straight down in slow motion. It was hard to find the right slope angle where you could actually move but not get slid.
On a traverse out of Green's Basin, we cut across a couple of small test slopes in the 38-45 degree range that surprised me by not cracking or moving a bit. Between the high ridgetop winds and warm temps, the new snow is setting up quickly and seems to have been bonded to the layers beneath.
On steep, open slopes, I think the danger is a solid "considerable" through-out the Wasatch, but in moderate angle, sheltered terrain, it is moderate, although you may have to ski back down your skin track just to gain some speed.
For the future, this was a nice, heavy, base-building storm which will hopefully settle out and cover up some of the brush.
