Problem #1 Comments
Much of the trail from Alta Central to Cardiff Pass was totally obscured at 415 PM, despite knowing that a few people had been up within an hour of me. On the test slope/pole line hill, I found drifts up to two feet deep. Up at the pass, I was able to follow a broken trail to the pass itself, and on the ridge it was easy to trigger small soft slabs on the cornices above the pass. These soft slabs were about 5 inches deep and 10 feet wide, with some much deeper drifts around that didn't quite seem reactive yet. I would expect these wind slabs are big enough on the right terrain features to catch and carry a person, and that they'll grow bigger overnight if the winds remain strong. I'd also expect wind slabs to be big enough to tip the scales on shady slopes with thin, weak snow, such as repeater slide paths in the monitors, rocky point, and upper days.

Strong winds, some density changes in the new snow, and hard old snow surfaces made skiing a little herky-jerky and clangy in the open pastures of S facing LCC. No surprise there, I guess. Overall, the new snow seemed fairly well bonded to the old snow by this afternoon. There's just enough wind-smoothed new snow to barely conceal a lot of the rocks that settled out of the snowpack during the recent sunny days. Going with a considerable rating for at least the early AM because I think natural windslab avalanches could be possible with continued very strong winds, and because I think enough transport has occurred to make at least thin, repeater paths on the PC ridgeline, etc, liable to avalanche overnight or under the weight of a skier tomorrow.
