We rode in the Tony Area today and found great riding conditions on all aspects. Slopes exposed to the sun were getting saturated by mid-day but still rode well. North facing terrain held great snow all day.
We had some minor sluffing on steep slopes. And had several wind slabs fail on steep east facing terrain. All slabs were less than 15 feet wide and were a maximum of 1 foot deep. We didn’t notice any other signs of avalanches in the Tony Grove Area and we got a pretty good look around early in the day before the clouds rolled in around noon.
Before we left home in the morning we noticed several sizeable slab avalanches on the Wellsvilles. Both appeared to be triggered by a cornice fall. The first was in upper North Pine Canyon. The slide looked like it was 2 feet-ish deep and 150 feet wide. The second slid was in upper Shumway Canyon, It look very shallow, probably less than a foot deep but it was several hundred feet wide and slid approximately 800 vertical feet. Both slabs were on Northeast Facing slopes and entrained only new snow.
