Went looking for facets under the dust layer. No results and basically no facets in 2 of my three pits.

  1. Pit 1 - NW facing, 8400 feet, ECTX
  2. Pit 2 - NW facing, 8460 feet, ECTX
  3. Pit 3 (see profile above) - N facing, 8260 feet, ECTP22, ECTP25

Photos and video below from Pit 3. While digging, it was very obvious that it was much weaker than the others.

Its getting harder to collapse the weak layer, but if you do it will certainly propagate across an entire slope or bowl. Recent avalanches confirm this. Tried running the sled above the pit wall to get the weak layer to crack. It wouldn't do it which demostrates its stubbornness and also the hard supporable layer above it. HOWEVER, there are plenty of irregularities in the snowpack. It can be tickled in the wrong place to produce an avalanche.
