Traveled in the Smith and Morehouse area from 7400ft-9200ft. Very shallow snowpack in the area traveled with 2 feet or less of snow on the ground. In general, the newest snow from the two storms just before Christmas is faceting and becoming weaker and less cohesive. It's sitting on a variety of facets and crusts, depending on aspect. The basal snow on the ground is 2 inches of frozen, knife hard snow. Above that are different layers af large grain facets and a couple of crust layers. Facet sluffs on steep slopes running until the slope angle slackened. Very weak, shallow snowpack in this area and not a good setup for when we finally get the addition of some water weight. Biggest hazard today were rocks, logs, and stumps with the avalanche hazard being moderate to low.
