We toured some lower elevation foothills today and found good riding conditions, especially where there was pre-existing snowpack before last week’s storm. There was about 18” of new light snow from Wednesday’s storm.
There are still plenty of signs of instability at lower elevations. We heard dozens of audible collapses at elevations below 7000 feet on all aspects. Some of the collapses settled enough that the settling was visible.
We noticed a bunch of avalanches that likely occurred during or at the end of Wednesday’s storm. The soft slab avalanches appeared to have failed on the new/old snow interface. All Slides were on steep north facing terrain one was several hundred feet wide and ran 500 vertical (see pics 1-3).
The snow surface is now covered in surface hoar at all aspects and elevations up to 7000 feet (see the last picture). If the rain does not destroy the surface hoar, it will form another layer to worry about in the future.
