Toured up White Pine Canyon towards NW shoulder of Red Baldy. Cloudy, snowing, minimal visibility. The new snow did not feel damp but it felt intermittently very warm, then chilly off and on depending on depth of cloud cover. Light winds off of the ridges. Ridge winds steady in the afternoon (15-20mph?) with wind slabs forming on top of graupel layer. Manageable when you could see more than 5 feet.
Stopped on small NE sub ridge to see if I could identify any wet slab hazard up high as was identified in this mornings forecast. Found wet impacted snow 30cm-70cm from top. Seems like good drainage channels were established. The wet layers were very distinct in the pit but No seeping/oozing. Minimal free water.
The new snow was light and soft on top of bouncy graupel.
Inverted ski pole went straight through the new snow and the breakable wet crust down about 70cm. Bellow this is a 1finger- pencil dense slab that goes all the way to the ground.
