I headed up before dawn this morning to the west flank of Hoyt Peak. The snow pack is quite a bit thinner ~150 cm in this area relative to the areas just to the east. There was about a foot of soft snow on top with about half of that being snow from last night. I dug on a north aspect at 9600 feet in an open area that measured 33 degrees. I was not able to get any failures within the entire snow pack, however; when pulling on the extended column the entire column easily collapsed and maintained form above the basal facets. The wind has had it's way the terrain void of trees up high. There is noticeable scouring and loading, however; I wasn't able to get anything to move, crack or collapse today. That said I also didn't put myself on top of any cornices.
