Went on a walk to check out the snow pack. I was surprised on what I found. Walking along the runout zones of south, southeast, and southwest facing Patsy Marley I found mostly faceted snow. Only due south had a melt freeze crust near the surface. I went the saddle between Sunset Peak and Rocky Point and skinned downhill to dig a pit in due north facing terrain. When I took my skis off I went right to the ground. There was a mixed bag of layers in the snow pack, some strong but mostly weak. Not really sure which layer will be reactive if we get a load of snow soon. All I can say is that the snow is weak on all aspects of the compass. The warming did help a little bit to strengthen the snow near the surface. However it is overall very weak and mostly facets. I did not have time to due a full profile but you can get an idea from my picture what the snow pack is like. Large facets or depth hoar at the ground, a slight melt freeze-crust above it, some buried wind slabs and facets above that, and a wind slab at the surface. The warming did seem to help to consolidate the near surface on all aspects but the depth hoar or facets at the ground were dry. In conclusion we have a weak snow pack and with a big enough load all aspects that have snow on them will be suspect.
