Snow Characteristics Comments

There was about 3 inches of new snow in the upper cirque of Maybird, it was mixture of medium density snow and graupel. Once you got down to the Red Pine bridge the new snow had disappeared into the old snow surface. Pretty solid freeze last night made for walking on a icy surface until you got above 9000ft, The sun soften the E,S and W aspects through out the day.

Comments

Went for one more attempt at dry north facing powder before the big heat up. Tried to ski a run on a NE facing slope on the N end of the Monolith but discovered it was dust on crust, with the new snow sluffing out to the frozen surface underneath. Decided to walk to the upper most cirque in Maybird and ski a due north facing aspect, seemed to work well the due north even though it is sun exposed still had retained dry snow and the 3 inches only improved the riding, any slight change in aspect and the crust was found. Noted a couple of large avalanches from last weeks cycle in the upper cirque and off the east facing Monolith. Noted only minor wet activity on mainly E and W aspects mostly just roller balls in the new 3 inches, Also noted a larger wet point release in the back bowl must have started in the W facing rocks and ran down the chute onto the N facing apron, made it about a third of the way down the slope. Did not see any other signs of instability. I would think there would be a window of corn skiing tomorrow but I think it will only be on S aspects, E and W aspects up high are still breakable crust, and the dry powder is becoming rare. Photos, sluffing of the new snow on a steep NE aspect around 9800ft, minor wet rollers, a larger point release in the upper cirque, crowns from last weeks cycle in the upper cirque, dry snow on high N becoming rare, had to do a couple.

Hazard depends on how hot it gets, didn't get out of control today, might in the next couple days
