Snow Characteristics Comments

The snow was a mixture of soft graupel and and rimed snow, The amount varied from 4 inches to 12 inches depending on aspect. The old snow new snow interface varied by aspect. East aspect was rock hard layer, hard to keep an edge on steep slopes. As slope aspect changed from East to North the Melt freeze layer was weaker a inch thick but would still support a skier. On a Northwest slope there was a foot of snow on a sheltered slope The crust was breakable under the ski.

Red Flags Comments
Wind loading of the new snow and any we get this weekend would be the next red flag mainly on the East and North east aspects. This would only be for the new snow and wind loading on the rock hard melt freeze crust. There was no real sliding surface on the North to North west slopes.

Comments

This profile was on a North slope, the crust was pencil hard made of large frozen grains. The new snow was bonding to the old snow. Not like on the adjacent east slope. The faceted snow under the crust was starting it round and form chains. The rest of the pack was one finger and the same through out he pack.

This is a photo of the faceted grains just under the crust. The grains are rounding and forming chains, this layer was about 1 inch in depth
