Comments
While skinning up Miller Bowl we heard and felt several audible collapses. The largest of the collapses lasted for 3-4 seconds sounding like rolling thunder. It sounded like the entire bowl collapsed. Small cracks were observed in the snow surface and you could see cracks near the upper cliffs from the lower portion of the bowl. We dug several pits on the ascent and found a thick layer of graupel buried under 8 inches of snow. The graupel layer was vey thick where it rolled off the cliffs and steep slopes above but was evident everywhere. Compression tests failed on the graupel layer at
We bailed on Miller bowl and headed for safer terrain in the Beginner Bowl. We experienced several more large collapses in the beginner bowl, one lasted another 3-4 seconds. We did not see any other signs of avalanches while looking south into Cottonwood an north toward Naomi and Magog. The snow in Miller Bowl was slightly inverted but up in the Beginner Bowl the medium density snow rode very well. Coverage was great everywhere (Especially for this being the first real storm of the season).
