Red Flags Comments
From the parking lot, we watched a path continually shed loose snow through a gully for over 5 minutes while we put our boots on and got ready. With no fracture lines or other signs of movement above, we could only guess that wind transported snow was being deposited onto old snow surface that was hard enough and steep enough that the transported snow never had a chance to stick, leaving it to just continually sluff off. Way cool to see.

Problem #1 Comments

Upper elevation basins had wind slabs on different aspects and elevations down to about 8,000 feet. These were mostly on larger terrain features well off of ridge lines. We did not achieve any upper elevation ridge lines, but I can only imagine the loading up there to be significant. Cracking did occur in some of these areas, but no movement otherwise.

Problem #2 Comments

Intense solar heating was being stymied higher up with winds keeping the snow surface cool, but free water could be seen in cliff bands on eastern aspects and rockfall starting later in the morning. Low down out of the wind wasn't warming as rapidly as I would have guessed, but we were back at the car before a surmised peak in temps.

Comments

I would have rated the danger to be considerable above 8000 feet because of the fairly wide range of aspects and elevation of the wind slabs we encountered.
