Today skied Big Water into Millcreek, and E facing Nipple into Buttler Fork. No one had ventured into Big Water since the storm cycle, discovered that the north facing slope was nicely locked up by the cold temps, boot deep creamy snow with a supportable base. I am thinking that the snow-pack 9000ft and below has locked up nicely with the cold temperatures and settlement felt pretty bomber in Big Water. That being said still hesitant to ski something like soldier which has a higher elevation starting zone and is quite a bit steeper. Been skiing the Nipple quite allot this year and found similar conditions to Big Water on the E facing, maybe a bit more winded, but locked up no less. Wind drifts were non-reactive and soft in the terrain covered, and cornice drops did not release any shallow wind slabs. Photos.
cornice drop on the Millcreek BCC divide.
Wind damage in wind affected terrain.
Low angle skied great today, no real need to push the slope angles.
My thinking is below 9000ft pack is locked up tight, moderate. High W through E is the wild card, might be hard to trigger a slide but if you do it won't be pretty, considerable.
