Well I've been out to Duke 3 times in the last week. There was about 2 inches of new snow over Saturday night and about 2 during the day which brought the total to 1 foot of settled powder on top dense loose, melt-freeze crust or wind slab. The new snow was medium density. The snow is filling in nicely. Some of the higher elevation plateaus have quite a bit of snow on top thick layers of facets buried around trees and rocks which can eat a snowmobile pretty easily. The larger boulder fields have the same characteristics but instead of eating my track I've broken through on my skins. With the wind moving around somewhat there has been quite a bit of snow transport. Wind slabs have been present on Duke (upper NW facing slope) where ever there is a significant void of trees. Yesterday I tried to get several slabs to collapse or move but they wouldn't budge. Although I wasn't out on Saturday, I noticed several cornices on the ridge line fell. I will be staying back far away from cornices through most of the rest of the season as many now have deep cracks far back from the edge.
