Snow Characteristics Comments

Skiing was much improved today, not punchy or as inverted as the last couple days. Time and warmer temps and a dense layer of graupel have done a nice job of smashing down the light density snow from earlier in the week. Top 8 to 10" consisted pretty much of graupel.

Comments

Route today was, East Hellgate SE facing which had a nice bomb crater in it, Keyhole entry into Cardiff N facing, Cardiac Ridge E-NE facing, Ivory Flakes E facing. Most aspects skied about the same with a little variance in ski penetration. Deeper ski penetration in the more sheltered terrain, Ivory Flake, less ski penetration in less wind sheltered terrain, Cardiac Ridge. There was a fairly large new snow only avalanche in the center punch of Cardiac Ridge, which made for a safe route up the slope, skied on the flanks with no instabilities note. Pics slide on Cardiac Ridge from the bottom, debris pile, whole slide.

Lots of slope testing by bombs and skiers with no results in the areas traveled. Wind was starting to damage upper wind exposed terrain, with a wind crust. No rime crust noted. Pic, Cardiff Bowl wind damage.
