Rime event # 7 for this year. Rime was noted in our travels to 9000 ft in elevation. We traveled mostly on east to northeast facing terrain. Skiing the upsidedown breakable rime crust was suckful. One run and done.

I bumped into Kowboy AKA (Brett Kobernik) at the park in ride and our teams joined forces into Mineral. Kowboy and I came up with a snow rating system at the bottom of our first run. It follows.... If the skiing is worth another lap it gets an automatic 5 out of 10. Yesterday the skiing was rated at 10. Today with the rime event the skiing off the top of the ridge was rated at 3 then as we worked down into sheltered NE facing terrain it bumped up to 5.5. Overall our ski run averaged a 4.25 in ranking and all the groups all decided to head home.

FORECASTER COMMENTS: Trent points out a very important rating scale that needs further work. (this is a joke to those not picking up on it). Seriously though, anytime the riding becomes poor because of an "upside down" feel to it, you should start thinking about avalanche danger increasing. I was able to trigger a number of small fresh wind slabs failing in yesterday's low density snow off the Mill B/Mineral ridge into Mineral. They were only about 30 to 40 feet wide and not entraining a whole lot of snow. There is enough pre-existing weak snow around Mineral under the fresh wind slabs that I thought it would be possible to initiate a collapse and create a more dangerous avalanche but we weren't able to tickle the right spot. On the way out we noted a number of pockets that released naturally after we walked up on the steep road cuts above the Mineral road along the steep switchbacks. There is no doubt that the avalanche danger increased today. Kobernik

This avalanche was triggered on a steep road cut on the summer trail. Sorry for the poor image, even my i phone rimed up.
