Comments
We decided to give Red Bald a go due to the warm temperatures forecasted, it's high elevation and it's NW facing aspect makes it the last slopes to get the sun, and the snow doesn't warm up as fast. Once we got there it was obvious that the slope avalanched wall to wall during the big loading event last weekend. The slide was over 1000ft wide and appeared to run on the PWL formed in December. There was also a newer small slide that happened after Thursdays storm which looked like a windslab pocket. The surface snow had a thin temperature crust down low and a thin wind crust up high. The snow never got damp on that slope at least not before 2pm when we left. Most of the snow below Red Baldy was damp or had a temperature crust that softened in the afternoon.
There were a few large wet slides and the biggest one we saw was in the Tri Chutes. There's still dry snow on the high N-NW but most of it has some wind damage or wind crust. Cody was up here a few weeks ago and didn't like the PWL, today it was obvious that it was gone on this slope due to the large avalanche. Pole probing revealed a firm bed surface under the new snow. In my opinion the hazard depends on which slope your heading too, I'm still sticking to slopes that have avalanched and have a hard bed surface underlying them, I'm still not ready to step out on slopes with the various PWL's still buried and intact, I'd be suspect of wet slabs and wet slides if we don't get a good refreeze tonight.
Photos: Veiws of the Avalanche, small windslab slide, large wet slide in the Tri Chutes area, and a video of Cody explaining our thinking.
