Beautiful day out there. Come for one stay forever yadda ya. If your eyes were closed you'd think we were out of the woods but the powderbirds triggered (either rotorwash or skiier remote) avalanche was a massive (4-6' deep 200' wide) and ugly in your face demonstration of the issue.
Otherwise there were few signs of instability. While probing above the big cardiac avalanche, I found the snow to be deep >2m and previously avalanched. The last 10' to the ridge was extremely weak, faceted to the ground and outright scary, I will not be going there again if there is another load or north/w wind event.
While skiing there was no real difference between bed surface and the unavalanched which was convenient on the way down. It will be really interesting to see what happens with more water and wind.
After three laps and zero signs of instability, skinning to the north and west, you could feel Alta's proximity and magic slipping away. Mineral fork is a war zone. I would say 80% of the slopes slid to the ground one week ago and much of the rest is still hanging on the balance waiting for a trigger. We were very diligent on our descent of east fork not to tickle the scary steep north east facing start zones. Much of it was rocks and facets with 6-8'' snow... Will not be returning with more load.
Of note a party of 3 skinned up holy Toledo nw facing multiple times skiied much of the face and had zero sluff or anything.
I am very impressed and grateful to the forecasting staff for so precisely articulating a very unique avalanche situation. Nice work team, thank you.
