Snow Characteristics
Snow Characteristics Comments
Given the pulse of snow that came to town yesterday afternoon/evening and Ben Lomond turning in for the night behind a shroud of clouds, I was optimistic there'd be appreciable overnight snow. Alas, this was not the case. Relatively easy travel on the uphill with variable surface conditions. Down low damp but soft on top of semi-supportive crust. Higher up, a bit of dust on crust, wind affected in the mid to upper elevations, preserved soft snow in protected areas, and skier compacted in the usual high traffic spots.
Red Flags
Red Flags Comments
Not much to write home about today. No recent avalanches, and no cracking/collapsing either. Unfortunately not much new snow, and not enough wind for much snow transport. It's too cool for rapid warming (but who knows how warm it might get by end of week). I stuck a hand in the snow a few times and found the various crusts continuing to decompose and basal facets up to 8000ft (didn't go higher today) trending toward stable--moist, rounding, etc.
