Weather Comments
Another cold morning with few clouds and lots of sun. Winds were calm to light below the ridge line, but picked up significantly once on top (also could see clouds moving very fast from a strong NW wind up high). The sun does seem to be having some effect on some southerly facing slopes.
Snow Characteristics
Snow Surface Conditions
Powder
Faceted Loose
Melt-Freeze Crust
Snow Characteristics Comments
Surface snow was mostly preserved powder and near surface facets and staying cold. Some southerly slopes we encountered had a soft crust (pictured at 8300' on SW slope) about an inch thick with faceted crystals on top. We encountered few, if any, hard wind slab formation, most of the hard snow we saw was sastrugi or MF crust. Very little blowing snow seen from the NW winds.
Red Flags
Red Flags Comments
We did not encounter any red flags (we were mostly concerned with sluff management in steep terrain, but we did not see much), but could see some across the way. Pictured are several smaller (wind) slabs that released probably in the last couple days between Logan and Providence peaks (E and NE aspects, at about 9400') (two of them reloaded with some drifting at the top).
