Snow Characteristics Comments
Just great and groovy snow conditions with lots of soft powder making for excellent riding and turning. The snow coverage right now is amazing and the traveling is easy and fun.

Red Flags Comments
Felt like the calm before the storm today , although the southwest winds along the ridge lines were quite strong and finding lots of snow to blow around. Recent natural and human triggered slides in the area are on the front of my mind as I move around and waiting in anticipation to see how the snow pack responds to the big weekend storm.

Problem #1 Comments
Feels like a lot of uncertanity right now with how the mid pack weak snow will react with a big stress put on it this weekend. There were places out in Gold Hill today where I dug around and there is over a 120cm (nearly 50") and it was difficult to get an isolated column of snow to fail, but would suspect where it is shallow it's a different set up.
Avalanche Problem #2
Problem
Wind Drifted Snow
Trend
Increasing Danger
Problem #2 Comments
Not sure if wind drifted snow or lots of new heavy wet snow would be the next avalanche problem. It might be a mute point if the snow totals and water amounts happen and it will all be a huge stress to the snow pack.
Comments
The photo does not really show how great the coverage and snow conditions are out there right now. It is great riding in the meadows and trees and away from any avalanche terrain.
Feels like the good old days where the mountains are stuffed with snow.
This snow pit on an northeast aspect in Gold Hill around 10,000' had 125cm (50") of snow and I finally had to bang on the isolated column with my boot to get a crack to propagate on the weak sugary snow deeply buried now. I think it's a different set up where the snow is shallow and the weak layer is closer to the surface and more easily affected. Where the slab is thinner I think avalanches are more easily triggered and could then break into a big and dangerous slide.
