Comments
Toured around some areas near summit park today that don't see a lot of skier traffic. Had multiple shooting cracks and whumpfs on low angle, low elevation (7000-7800ft) shady slopes - basically anywhere there wasn't a hard sun crust under the new snow. Would expect to trigger a slide on any steep N facing slopes in area, especially if they don't have a ton of previous skier traffic.
Photo is of the largest crack I saw - would for sure have slid if angle was steeper.
Second photo is a mini profile at the spot the large crack happened - structure is prime sketchy setup - well connected windslab on top of super weak facets with a good hard bed surface below. Fresh few inches on the surface hides the wind slab. Seems like a similar structure to the avalanche observation from Mt. Aire yesterday.
