I set out to a do a few laps on a nearby knob west of the North Fork horse corrals (known as Cowboy Boots). Just a few steps into the start of the climb from the southern saddle, a well defined crack occurred through the newest layer of snow from the previous day/evening. The crack created a clear boundary in front, behind, and below me. I gave it a few loading forces but nothing more than sluffing with me sliding over the most recent ice crust. I decided to do a quick hand block assessment and upon clearing the bottom of the block, it immediately slid without any load. I did another hand block test a few feet away and it remained in place but was easily broken at the second lower layer ice crust. While not a concern for the short run I had planned to ski, consideration for a large dry loose avalanche in steeper terrain with terrain traps either upon initial or repetitive loading would be a concern.
